Why Body Positive Baby?
I created Body Positive Baby because, as a culture, far too much of our precious energy gets waisted on body dissatisfaction and insecurities, and stressing over what we should eat. In addition, there is so much confusion and misinformation about what it even means to be healthy, eat right, and have confidence. Pregnancy and postpartum can be a particularly difficult period of time because, on the one hand, you want to be spending your time joyously reveling in this miraculous experience, but on the other hand your body and relationship to food is changing drastically, often in uncomfortable and unexpected ways. While trying to wade through all the changes and figure out how to deal with it, every other person you meet feels entitled to tell you what you should and should not be doing with your body and how you should be eating. All of this together can cause pregnancy and postpartum to become a time of even more mistrust and alienation from our bodies.
My intention is for all of my classes to be safe spaces to learn all of the information and techniques that you need to give birth, and navigate postpartum, and an opportunity to explore and heal your relationship with your body, so you can begin your parenting journey with trust in yourself, your body, and the process, and confidence in your choices.
What is a confident birth?
Birthing with confidence means that parents are grounded in accurate and up to date information about how the pregnant and laboring body works and what to expect. They also understand the different birth options available to them and their risks and benefits. They have thought about and made plans for how they want labor and birth to go and they take steps to support them in achieving their vision. During labor they remain committed to their birth vision and flexible in their experience and expectations. If circumstances occur that require them to change their plans, they are actively engaged in the decision making process. Ultimately, they can look back on the experience with peace, contentment, and joy. A confident birth will look different for everyone. Everyone has a different journey, and my goal is to support you along your unique path.
Every Body has the right to a confident birth, no matter what their circumstances. It is not uncommon for people to be excluded from the right to make choices about their birth experience, especially people who are considered high-risk, or "overweight." The truth is that every decision we face in life has risks and benefits, and no one has the right to choose for someone else what risks they should or should not be able to take. Healthcare providers, family and friends, peers, and internet searches can provide great advice and guidance, but ultimately no one knows what you need or cares about you and your baby better than you. My goal is to help you navigate all the information and advise and to support you in making the best choices for you and your growing family.
